A Great Day

My iPhone broke on Friday. One might not find this worthy of a blog post, but my iPhone is my most prized possession next to my Aggie ring and the CRaVe. It may even be my best friend. Fortunately, I had purchased a two-year warranty on the phone (called Apple Care).

"Your Apple Care won't cover the damages to this phone," said the Apple Store repair man the next day. "When I shine a light on [the bottom of your phone], it lights up pink, which means there's been significant water damage. We can replace your phone today for $199."

I seriously doubted that water damage from sweating on it a few times had been responsible for the demise of my phone. My initial inclination was to argue with this guy, but I knew picking a fight with him wouldn't get me anywhere. Plus, I was just happy I was going to have a phone again. So, instead of arguing with the repair man, I gladly accepted the $199 offer and thanked him for taking the time to help me out. Then I went a little overboard and thanked him for transferring my numbers, for programming the new phone, and for being generally very helpful. I think I had tears in my eyes when he said I'd have mobile phone capabilities again in just a few short minutes, for I had been lost those 24 hours without my phone. I had consumed a few adult beverages at the pool earlier that day (to celebrate Gorman's return from his honeymoon, of course), so I was feeling especially happy and thankful.

Then the repair man said something I won't forget, "I'm going to take care of it for you this time, but you need to be careful about any water coming in contact with your new phone." I wasn't quite sure what he meant, but minutes later he handed me a brand new iPhone and refused my debit card when I offered it to him. I walked out in a daze.

Then I went to see 500 Days of Summer with the Gormans. I expected it to be a pleasant romantic comedy, but it turned out to be so much more. It was a work of art, and I sat quietly at the end of the movie, knowing I had just seen something important and beautiful. I hadn't felt such strong emotions to art since Casey, Logan, and I had screamed the words to "Motorcycle Drive-By" at a Third Eye Blind concert last month (unbeknownst to me, we were being observed and mocked by Amy Boone that night).

I was reminded of some important lessons on Saturday: 1) Enjoy some adult beverages with your friends at the pool. 2) Show appreciation to helpful people, and genuinely compliment them on their expertise. 3) Look for beauty in unsuspecting places. There's nothing groundbreaking about these lessons, but they all added up to make for a pretty great day.

For those readers who are not as genuinely kind or complimentary as Justin, I have found that kindness and enthusiastic appreciation towards others will work in your favor regardless of its sincerity.
