The problem with A.M. radio

In light of the Republican debate tonight, I thought I’d take a moment to write a political blog post. I need to admit something shameful to you, my loyal readers. Due to my overall disinterest in music, my only other option is listening to A.M. radio every day. This consists of Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and the occasional Sean Hannity (although I can’t really stand that guy). There are very few liberal A.M. talk shows out there because there’s very little substance in liberalism. They can complain about Bush for a thirty minute segment, but then that leaves them with nothing else to talk about. That’s why these shows get moved to Air America, and then eventually canceled—because they have no substance and very little (if any) logic.

So, what am I apologizing for? Well, I think there’s something dangerous about filling one’s mind with hours and hours of conservative radio. The problem is this: I believe everything Rush Limbaugh tells me. Everything he says makes sense to me, and his words always have a logical path. Rush’s job is to discredit liberalism, and thus, discredit liberals. A.M. radio causes me to separate people into two categories, liberals and conservatives. If I find out someone’s liberal, I tend to rush to judgment on that person. Well, this guy is liberal, so he must have all these other qualities that go along with liberalism. I stereotype liberals and rob myself of the opportunity to find out who they really are and where they’re coming from.

So, now that I’ve recognized this problem, do I intend to stop listening to talk radio? No way (well, maybe Hannity)! But I do intend to stop looking judgmentally at people just because they are liberal. There’s so much I can learn from any person, and I’ve been cheating myself out of this opportunity. No longer!
